Etymological Origin: From the Greek entropia — “a turning toward, transformation.” Clausius introduced it (1865) as the measure of a system’s irretrievable loss of usable energy. In thermodynamics it names the second law: disorder increases, differences flatten, usable work drains away.
Native Textures (Physics + Cosmology): In Newtonian mechanics entropy is energy gone to waste; in cosmology it describes the “heat death” toward which the universe drifts — stars exhausted, black holes evaporating, spacetime thinned to uniformity. Entropy is not chaos but sterile order, the spreading sameness that extinguishes all difference. Nietzsche’s “Spirit of Gravity” comes remarkably close to this: a kosmic heaviness pulling all life back to inertia.
Colonized Definition: Entropy is cast as an impersonal, inevitable law. The moral consequence is nihilism: if all ends in heat death, nothing matters. Empire weaponizes this despair, presenting its extractive systems as natural law. Scarcity becomes its daily practice, Entropy its eschatology.
Effect of Colonization: When a culture absorbs entropy uncritically it resigns itself to enclosure, credit apartheid, and engineered depletion. Empire imitates entropy’s logic: siphoning vitality from living systems, accelerating dis-integration so that only its machine survives a little longer. Scarcity is Entropy’s tactic; Empire is its apparatus; nihilism is its psychological victory.
Critical Insight: For the Ebyonim, entropy is not just a law of physics but the Spirit of Entropy — Ahriman, Angra Mainyu, the sterile order hiding behind “progress.” It is the parasite at the heart of every psychopath’s justification, the siphon behind every imperial system, the root of every conflict. Nietzsche glimpsed this when he cast Zarathustra as an anti-gospel, trying to de-imperialize Jesus, Plato, and Zarathustra himself. We do likewise, turning to Zoroaster, Plato’s world-animal, and Yehoshua’s Jubilee praxis to name our “devil”: the siphon of wholeness into lifeless systems.
Reclaimed Definition: Entropy is real, but not ultimate. Genesis’ image of YHWH “breathing life” into the dust of the Earth is the kosmic counter-force: Spirit poured into star-stuff. John 3:16 does not say God loves only humanity; it says God loves the Kosmos with boundless compassion — the same dust, the same star-birth molecules, the same energy slowed enough to become matter. YHWH’s love is not static but generative: an ongoing infusion of negentropy, a Jubilee of the substrate itself.
We glimpse this in our physics myths. Interstellar’s Bulk Beings leave a tesseract for Cooper; the Burning Bush may have been a similar phenomenon — a “bulk” transmission of pure energy slowed enough for Moses to perceive, the Jubilee encoded like Murphy’s ghost codes waiting for her to decode them. These “radio waves from heaven” recur across cultures, wherever humans awaken to ethics and life-affirmation.
Humanity’s vocation, in Johannine terms, is to garden against Entropy: to be kosmic stewards of Chavva/Zoe (all-life), swords into ploughshares, nasi (steward, not lord) of Earth’s processes. Entropy does not mean futility; it means vigilance. Covenant is the technology of vigilance: common purse, debt release, bread shared before it molds, life restored before it decays.
Takeaway: Entropy is the shadow written into creation’s fabric. Left unchallenged, it suffocates vitality into void. But Covenant interrupts Entropy with coherence. Every act of justice, mercy, and Jubilee creates local negentropy — pockets of restored order that resist the siphon. The final vision is not heat death but a kosmic garden where Spirit circulates as breath and abundance renews itself endlessly. Entropy whispers inevitability; Covenant answers with restoration.
A Yohananiim Pesher on Entropy
John 3:16–17
“For God so loved the Kosmos that God gave…”
Pesher: The covenant-keeper breathes life into star-stuff; this is not metaphor but physics: dust of stars animated by Spirit. Entropy’s siphon is not final because YHWH pours negentropy — mercy, breath, belovedness — into matter itself.
John 10:10
“The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
Pesher: The thief is Entropy’s signature — siphon, enclosure, sterile order. Yehoshua’s Jubilee action at the Temple was a kosmic counter-move: restoring circulation where hoarding had calcified. Life “abundant” = negentropic flow, not mere duration.
John 21:5–6
“Children, have you any food? … Cast the net on the right side…”
Pesher: Post-resurrection, the Teacher instructs them in abundance again: cast differently, share the catch, feed all. This is the covenantal practice that counters Entropy’s scarcity. The Sea = kosmos; the net = kehilla; the act = local negentropy.
Implication:
Nietzsche sensed that the real “devil” is not chaos but gravity, the Spirit of Gravity that drags all difference into sameness. John sensed that YHWH’s Jubilee action is Kosmic: boundless compassion, negentropy poured into star-stuff. Our task is to live as gardeners in the universe’s dissipating field — nodes of coherence, channels of Spirit, local interruptions of the siphon.
